This is an interview with a famous trader to ask the hard questions regarding the necessary characteristics of a successful stock market trader, and also, how to maximize one's time when trading.

This is an interview with a famous trader to ask the hard questions regarding the necessary characteristics of a successful stock market trader, and also, how to maximize one’s time when trading.

David: Here’s a question that has been sent in: I’m new to this game and I’m slowly but surely learning. How does one become a trader? What are the habits that are common to your family? Where must I begin so to speak in order to make the first confident step, to feel as a trader must, in knowing where to look. What I’m trying to find is an underlying process that will ensure the job’s done successfully.

If you are a blacksmith, in order to make a tool I need to understand the whole process in my mind before I begin. This is so I can know exactly what tool is to be used in order to develop design and the process to do this, in order to feel confident of the success, allowing that our best made plans can still fail due to unforeseen uncalculated constraints. How do I learn or find my basic processes associated to your profession?

Stuart: What I learned out of this is what behaviors do we associate with a stock market trader? When I think of traders, I think of people who are structured, disciplined, they’re planners, they’re organized, they’re efficient. A couple of important ones there are being organized and being structured. They have a methodology they follow; they have a routine that they follow, obviously complementing their plan.

David: He also asks wanting to know what tools to use in order to develop and design and the process, when he was using the analogy of the blacksmith. There are the three m’s the mindset, money management and method, making sure you have those in place. It is also taking it in the right steps. A quick overview: make sure you define your objectives. This will dictate what markets you will be trading and the methodology you will be using. Also what returns, and is it realistic.

As you look at some entries and exits and money management for that particular market and make sure you document those appropriately. Then you do some backtesting to build up the confidence or even some paper trading if you’re not comfortable doing backtesting. Depending on what components you’ve got in your trading, some are easier to backtest than others and then you look at starting to trade your system. If you have backtested, keep monitoring your system, keep an eye on the stats as you go, to see that you are on track and you will be on your way to becoming a successful stock market trader.

The next question which is: my biggest issue is with time. With a full-time job, kids and working life limits my time. What sort of system can be used that would maximize my time? Many trading systems treat you as if all you have is all day trade, but a lot of people would rather have a system that uses less than an hour per day. How can this be done?

Stuart: Trading stocks medium term is probably the easy answer to that. I think the situation that person has raised a lot of people could relate to. That’s how I started. Our ultimate goal is to give up work and trade full-time but we need to go through that apprenticeship to get to that point. While we do that we need the support and security of a full-time job until we can become a fully fledged stock market trader.

The end of fossil fuel resources is near. The way oil and other natural resources have been extracted from the earth in the last century; the world is in danger of facing global warming as well as depletion of these precious resources. Do you know China is the largest producer of coal? Coal production n China would peak somewhere around 2010-2020. Are you aware of the fact that the peak of the global oil production (all liquids, including unconventional oil) will peak in the next few years.

The global peak of uranium production lies somewhere around2025-2050. The global peak of natural gas production lies somewhere around 2025! You must be thinking what to do every available source of energy seems to be peaking in the near future?

But there are many safe and environmentally friendly methods to generate the energy required. Up till now these methods had been ignored maybe because they were a bit expensive. They were expensive in the sense that these methods factor in the external costs that were previously being ignored. Do you know this fact that the US Department of Energy has estimated that there is enough available offshore wind energy of the coasts of US that can nearly cover the current US electricity capacity? So what will fill this void in energy production in the coming decades?

With introduction of energy saving technology in the fluorescent lamps and bulbs, a lot of energy can be saved. If every bulb in the US was replaced with an energy efficient fluorescent lamp, enough energy could be saved to shut down around 100 power plants. If all the care in US were hybrids by 2025 that would roughly reduce 80% of the US oil import.

The solution is already there and as the end of fossil fuel nears which is only a decade away, more and more alternative energy solutions will be used to generate cheap energy. Enough power could be generated for the entire US by covering only 9% of Nevada desert with parabolic trough systems. This is something like a plot of land 100 by 100 miles.

You might have seen only a glimpse of that last year in 2008 when crude oil prices jumped to around $150 per barrel. This is something that is bound to happen. The supplies of fossil fuel are finite and will be exhausted in the near future. When the oil price reached above $100, plans got rolling for massive investment in the alternative energy sector. With the oil price coming down, these plans have been shelved but will be rerolled again when the oil price again starts to sky rocket.

There is little doubt that companies operating in the green energy sector will ultimately become the major players in the overall energy generation and transportation mix of tomorrow. This prediction is based on our insatiable energy consumption and the lack of conventional supplies to meet the growing energy demand. This is most probably the safest long term bet that you can make in the long term.

Keeping in view the above facts, investing in green energy stocks in the best long term investment that you can make! Imagine Henry Ford in’09 asking you to invest in his Ford Motor Company that is about to mass produce a horseless carriage.

But many folks in that year of’09 were skeptical about Model T success. This is now 2009, exactly a century has passed. Do you think investing in green energy stocks is a bad idea? He tells you that this invention could change the entire landscape of the country. Knowing everything that you know right now with the power of hind sight with you, you will definitely say yes.

Candlestick charting is a highly powerful tool in the trading arsenal of any trader. In the last two decades, candlestick charting has become highly popular. There are many candlestick patterns that give profitable trading signals. Some are simple while other are complex. Hammer, the Hanging Man and the Spinning Top are three simple candlestick patterns that can be easily spotted. All three are different!

The first question. How do you identify whether this is a Hanging Man or a Hammer? Hammer and the Hanging Man both have a very small candle body accompanied by a long wick either on the bottom. If this type of pattern appears at the top of an uptrend with the long wick at the bottom, it is a Hanging Man. And if it appears at the bottom of an downtrend it is a Hammer.

Now, in most of the cases, you will also find a small wick on the top of the candle body. Now suppose, you find the Hammer or the Hanging Man. What you need is to look for the confirmation the next day!

If the opening price on the next day is less than the previous day’s close, you have a true Hanging Man. If not, then that was not a true Hanging Man. Now suppose, you think that you have spotted the Hanging Man in an uptrend. Wait for the confirmation the next day with the opening price.

A Hammer should have a very small candle body with a long wick at the bottom. Similarly suppose, you think that you have correctly spotted the Hammer in a downtrend. You should confirm this with the opening price on the next day. If the opening price is higher than the closing price the previous day, you have a true Hammer. If the opening price is not higher than the closing price the last day, it is not a true Hammer!

Whenever, you trade candlestick patterns, first spot them correctly than wait for the confirmation on the following day. The best chart for these candlestick patterns is the daily chart. Once, you get the confirmation, trade these patterns. They can be highly profitable. But in case, you don’t get the confirmation the next day with the price action, simply ignore the pattern as not true.

A Spinning Top is another candlestick pattern that reveals a tight battle between the bulls and the bears. Whenever, the battle between the bulls and the bears ends in a draw on a trading day, the following day, one side has to give in. When this happens an explosive move in one direction is highly likely.

How to identify a SPINNING TOP? A Spinning Top has a very small candle body in the middle with two equal wicks on the top and the bottom. This pattern appears very frequently in the daily charts and can be highly profitable if spotted correctly.

Mr. Ahmad Hassam has done Masters from Harvard University. Master Candlestick Patterns with this 82 page PDF FREE Candlestick Guide!

Many analysts are of the opinion that commodity investing maybe the best investments in the early part of the 21st century. Take the name of oil, oil is the most heavily traded commodity in the world right now. Gold is another commodity that is reaching record price levels. Gold prices for the first time have breached the unheard of $1000 per ounce barrier. Investing in commodities may be the something that investors thought of boring and dull only a few decades back but not anymore now. If you are interested in investing in companies that are involved in the production, transformation and distribution of commodities, than one of the best ways to do so is through investing in the Master Limited Partnership (MLP).

MLPs are public entities that trade on public exchanges. An MLP issues shares that trade on an exchange just like a company stocks that trades on an exchange. You can invest in an MLP by buying its shares on an exchange. The shares that an MLP issues are called Units and the investors who own them are known as Unit Holders.

Now most of the MLPs trade on the New York Stock Exchange. A few MLPs also trade on the NASDAQ and the AMEX. When you invest in an MLP, you are essentially investing in public partnership. There are tax advantages to investing in MLP. Unlike regular corporations, an MLP is only taxed once. Because of Congressional Legislation, any MLP that derives 90% or more of its income from the production, distribution and transformation of commodities qualifies for this tax exempt scheme. You must be curious how this tax advantage works out.

There is a tax exemption on MLPs. You must be curious how this tax advantage works out. Because of Congressional Legislation, any MLP that derives 90% or more of its income from the production, distribution and transformation of commodities qualifies for this tax exempt scheme.

This tax advantage gives an MLP competitive advantage as compared to other corporations when competing for assets. This means a huge advantage for an MLP. Now an MLP is run by a General Partner (GP). In most cases, the majority of these GPs in MLPs are other corporate entities setup with the specific purpose of running an MLP.

The role of a GP is very important in an MLP. You as an investor in the assets of MLP might have a very limited role or say in its running. You can think of yourself as a sleeping partner in the MLP. In most cases, the majority of these GPs in MLPs are other corporate entities setup with the specific purpose of running an MLP. This tax advantage gives an MLP competitive advantage as compared to other corporations when competing for assets. This means a huge advantage for an MLP. Now an MLP is run by a General Partner (GP). But you don’t have to worry much about the GP. Most GPs do a good job of running the MLP as it is in their financial interests. GPs know that if they don’t make sound management and investment decisions, most of the investors my eventually deicide to divest themselves from the units of the MLP. Now you must know as a limited partner in an MLP, you have limited voting rights. This means when you invest in an MLP, you are giving away the keys of ownership to the GP. This means you are out of the decision making in an MLP.

Investing in MLP units can give you quarterly cash flows as well as appreciation of the unit price. An MLP is obligated to distribute all available cash back to its unit holders on a quarterly basis, so you will be getting a quarterly income from your units. Secondly as the MLP expands and grows overtime, its units may give you capital gain as well.

Crude oil trades around the world. Crude oil is one of the most heavily traded commodities in the world. Every day perhaps billions of dollars worth of crude oil gets traded. New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) is considered to be the hub of crude oil trading in the world.

You should be aware of the power of crude oil in the global economy. Crude oil trades around the world. Crude oil is one of the most heavily traded commodities in the world. Every day perhaps billions of dollars worth of crude oil gets traded. You must be thinking that crude oil contracts get traded between the oil producing countries like Saudi Arabia, Russia, Nigeria and so on with non oil countries. Now to your surprise, New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) is considered to be the hub of crude oil trading in the world.

Light Sweet Crude is the high grade, low sulfur content crude oil that is more easily refined than the thicker oils. Now crude oil coming out of some of the Venezuelan and Saudi Arabian Oil wells contains high sulfur content and requires special refineries that only process the high grade sulfur crude oil. On the other hand Iraqi oil is close to the ground and has very low sulfur content. Ever heard of Light Sweet Crude? Sulfur content in oil is considered to be very important. Lower the sulfur content in crude oil, the easier and less costly will be its refining. The higher the sulfur content in the crude oil, the more expensive its refining will be.

At NYMEX, you can trade crude oil futures contracts based on Dubai Crude Oil, Brent North Sea Crude Oil, differential between the light sweet crude oil and the four domestic grades of crude oil and a few more. Oil options are also traded on NYMEX. Now Dubai Crude Oil Futures contract is very popular. So, NYMEX offers you a host of futures as well as options contracts based on crude oil.

A barrel of oil contains 42 US gallons. Crude oil is traded in US dollars per barrel. In other words, the price of crude oil is quoted in US dollars per barrel. Now trading at NYMEX can be open outcry during the regular treading hours as well as electronic web based trading after hours.

Open outcry or electronic, it doesn’t make a difference to you. Most of the traders now day trade futures contracts from the comfort of their homes. Open outcry trading takes place between 10: 00 AM EST to 2:30 PM EST. After hour trading takes place on NYMEX ACCESSS system, an internet based trading platform starting at 3:15 PM EST Monday through Thursday and ending at 9:30 AM EST the following day. Sunday trading starts at 6:00 PM EST.

It’s always good to visit the website of the exchange to know more. You can visit the website of NYMEX and read a more about the crude oil trading that takes place at that exchange. Trading oil markets requires constant vigil on your part in monitoring the global supply and demand of crude oil. You will need to know which country supplies how much and what the productions quotas are for the time being. This is pretty scary stuff. Now you must know this thing that real companies have huge trading desks with hundreds of traders all betting on the price of oil. Oil markets are about real people trying to figure out how much oil they would need in the next few months to years to run their businesses regardless of whether they are suppliers or users. Trading crude oil futures contracts require you to be in tune with the market sentiment. Trends in crude oil market don’t develop suddenly and they don’t reverse suddenly. This is something good for you as a crude oil futures trader.

As a crude oil futures trader you will need to know how to handle the seasonal cycle in the oil market as well as the weekly cycle. Now every week usually on Wednesday the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the US Energy Information Agency (EIA) releases their weekly supply data reports. If you want to trade crude oil futures than you should know Mark Soberman! What you need to do is click on the link on the left that says FREE EVIL GENIUS TRADING KIT. This trading kit is from Mark Soberman. Don’t worry its 100% safe and legal. You only need to come out of your comfort zone. Download the free kit and find a unique method to trade the crude oil futures! When a trend in the crude oil market develops, it may last for a few months to a year. It all depends on the global supply and demand situation of the crude oil. If you can spot a trend in the crude oil market in its early stage and ride it till its reversal, you can make a good profit. Now, just keep this in mind that crude oil prices are highly susceptible to global geopolitical situation and react violently to any political global uncertainty.

The recent price of crude oil was quoted as $ 80 per barrel. It is being predicted that the price will soon reach the $ 100 per barrel mark. Analysts are of the opinion that this price might reach as high as $ 200 per barrel. In any case, with the end of global recession, the demand for crude oil will again rise making the oil prices go sky high as the supply cannot keep up with the rising demand.

Trading in energy futures is centralized at the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), the world’s largest physical commodity futures exchange. NYMEX trades futures and options contracts for crude oil, natural gas, heating oil, gasoline, coal, electricity and propane. NYMEX is also home to trading in metals. Trading in NYMEX is conducted in two divisions: 1) The NYMEX Division and 2) The COMEX Division. For smaller traders NYMEX offers e-mini contracts for oil and natural gas that also trades on the GLOBEX network of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME).

Sometimes the rise in oil prices leads to the increase in interest rates through the bond market and the actions of central banks and the other times the opposite happens. Rise in oil prices if often inflationary. As a trader, you should know this fact that oil price rise often tends to slow down the economy and lower retail sales as well as consumer confidence with lower traffic on the highways.

High oil prices are considered to be inflationary and tend to slow down the economy. Low oil prices are always considered good for the economy. As a trader, you should know this fact that oil price rise often tends to slow down the economy and lower retail sales as well as consumer confidence with lower traffic on the highways. Sometimes the rise in oil prices leads to the increase in interest rates through the bond market and the actions of central banks and the other times the opposite happens. Rise in oil prices if often inflationary. Now all these effects have a time lag factor built in them. If the crude oil prices increase or jump suddenly like that in’73, it takes time for the increased oil prices to start affecting the other factors in the economy.

No new major discovery of an oil well has been made in the past two decades. This means that the supply of oil is dwindling while the global demand for oil is on the rise. Now you need to understand the Peak Oil Concept. Peak oil is the concept that the world oil production has peaked and the production of oil will never be as high again. Oil prices and the interest rates generally move in the same direction when viewed over long periods of time.

In any case, most of the experts now agree that in the next 10-20 years, the oil production will peak and after that it will start declining. Now you should keep these facts in the background of your mind as a trader.

Now this means that in the short run, following oil prices can be a highly profitable strategy. Your aim as a trader is to make quick profits by trading the price fluctuations in the oil market. So the important facts that you need to keep in the back of your mind while trading oil is: 1) Demand fluctuates but supply of oil is finite. 2) The world runs on oil and any threat to the supply of oil often leads to rising prices. As an oil trader your primary goal is to consider the effects of events on the supply of oil and correlate this effect with your charts.

Most of us have enough of a grasp on economics to realize that currency exchange rates go up and down against other world currencies. Many of us have experienced currency exchange rates in action when we have traveled overseas or bought something online from another country. But what we might not realise are the reasons behind the fluctuations in currency exchange rates.

What currency exchange rates actually are is a comparison of the value of one particular currency with another world currency. They are usually expressed as as ratio and look like – 1 US Dollar = 105 Japanese Yen. These currency exchange rates vary every day and you will often see the financial journalists talking about the dollar rising and falling. Sometimes in the case of recession or economic crisis the exchange rates can decline sharply.

Supply and demand of the currency is one of the key factors determining the exchange rate. Demand for the currency comes when lots of investors want to invest using that currency. This can be prompted by higher interest rates in a country, which will give investors a better return on their money. Supply of currency can affect the exchange rate in tandem with demand. If there is a lot of people wanting to purchase and not so much currency available the value will be high. On the other hand, if the federal mint prints lots of extra money and releases it into the market place then supply will be higher and demand for the currency can drop, which will make exchange rates drop.

Another factor affecting currency exchange rates is a country’s inflation rate. If inflation levels are high in a country, then the currency of that country will be devalued as it is not an attractive purchase for foreign currency investors.

The trade balance in a country is also very important for determining currency exchange rates. When prices paid for exported products are higher than what a country pays for its imports, then the nation is more profitable and the economy is stronger. If there is a good trade balance, then investors will find that economy more attractive to invest in and then exchange rates rise.

The currency exchange rates are not only important when you are planning to go on an overseas vacation. We are affected by exchange rates on a regular basis, as the currency exchange rates determine how much we pay for imported products and goods and how much other countries are willing to pay for exported products.

Jobs and economic stability are also affected by currency exchange rates. In order to be more competitive companies and businesses may be forced to cut costs to remain viable against other producers around the world. This can translate into people being let go from their jobs. Most recently this has been seen around first world countries as part of the global economic crisis.

There are a number of economic forces that affect the way that currency exchange rates perform. Reserve banks in each country work to control the factors as much as possible that affect these rates and provide the best environment possible for a well functioning and effective economy. Next time you see the financial markets on the evening news, you will know more about what must be happening in the local economy to influence the currency exchange rates.

Numerous circumstances rule currency exchange rates. Learn all about an exchange rate calculator and all of the factors that help current value of different monies.

Trading would be almost impossible without charts and technical analysis. Trading is all about anticipating and predicating rather than forecasting. Technical analysis is the best tool a trader can have. A picture is worth more than a thousand words.

Always remember, trend is your friend. Trading in the direction of the trend is the best trading strategy. Never try to trade against the trend. So determining the primary direction of the trend is highly importanct for you. Primary trend is the direction of the market that offers the least resistance forward making money. When you follow a primary trend in a bull market you look for strong stocks and in a bear market you look for stocks showing weaknesses. The most important thing that you should in a market is its primary trend. In order to determine the primary direction of the trend, you need to draw correct trendlines. This is an art that traders learn with experience. A wrong trendline means lost trades. You use the following tools to determine the primary trend! Knowing the primary trend and trading in its direction increases your chances of making money. So how do you find the primary trend and what tools you need to determine the primary trend?

Trendlines: Knowing how to draw and use trendlines gives you an excellent start on any trade. To correctly draw a rising trendline on the chart, start with the lowest low on the chart and connect it to the lowest low preceding the highest high in the chart without bothering about the prices between the two points. Similarly to draw the down trendline, draw a line connecting the highest high on the chart to the highest high preceding the lowest low of the chart without passing through the prices between the two prices.

Moving Averages: Moving averages are sues to smooth out the market’s trend over a given period of time and serve as an important support and resistance levels. Support level is the price where the prices stop falling and the buyers step in overcoming the selling pressure. A break in the support level is an indication that more weakness may be ahead.

A break above the resistance level is an indication that the market is going strong. Resistance level is the price where prices stop rising and the sellers overcome the buying pressure. You should always keep this rule in mind that you should be out of the market by selling as soon as the key support is broken. On the other hand you should buy into the market as soon as the key resistance is broken.

Oscillators: Oscillators are technical tools whose movements up or below a certain level give you an important trading signal. What is more important to know is the fact that oscillators produce useful mathematical data that can help you tell whether the market is overbought or oversold and whether the momentum of the primary trend in the market is still strong or there is a potential change in the primary trend ahead? Two important oscillators that you should be familiar with are RSI and MACD. Oscillators are graphic depictions of points derived from the mathematical formulas that are plotted below the price charts. Knowing these mathematical formulas is not important as a trader. MACD is a highly popular technical indicator and is widely used by the traders in divergence trading.

Bollinger Bands: Bollinger bands are calculated by plotting points one or more standard deviations above and below the 20-day moving average. However, you can calculate Bollinger Bands with any moving average. Bollinger bands are also known as volatility bands or envelopes. Bollinger bands give you visual evidence when the market has travelled too far in any one direction.

It’s been a difficult year for economics all over the world. With the tumble of the United States economy, in large part due to the absolute plummet of America-based stock markets, including the NASDAQ, a ripple effect was set into motion that reached further than many analysts could have predicted. While many talking heads experts recommended that it wasn’t a time to sell back in October of 2008, as the picture became clearer, many financial gurus were left scratching their heads in confusion.

While those scientists of the stock market might have just been bewildered, regular people all over the world were more like stupefied. With so much faith in global economic systems, including the overall stock market, and the understanding that governments are supposed to have a series of checks and balances in place to avoid potential catastrophe, the grim dismal situation was first met with disbelief by regular people.

The world stock market’s value has been estimated at close to seven hundred trillion dollars, with the role of the United States economy in that market significant, at around forty trillion dollars. However, the last year or so has been a see-saw ride of recovery, with times looking up and times looking extremely dismal. Entire countries have been bankrupted through the cause and effect of foreign investments. Famously, the entire country of Iceland, a small island nation with only two or three national banks, managed to lose the entire country’s savings just because of the faltering power of the dollar and the Euro in unison.

International industry is a major component in how the financial troubles of one major industrialized nation could impact so many others. Many business are now international, especially corporations with a great deal of power and market shares. To do business well in the 21st century is to understand it as an international enterprise, and since investments are tied into a world scale, it’s no wonder that stock markets crashing can have such an epic and global effect.

Part of the reason that the last crash impacted so many countries worldwide is that, instead of simply investing in national markets, many different investors of all tiers go outside of the country to other markets around the world. With an already fuzzy business of regulation, it gets even more confusing when people are working through international banking institutions.

What’s surprising is that no one was there sounding the alarm louder when the slip started to take place. After all, the United States has survived one Great Depression and dodged a financial bullet in the 1980s. There were supposed to be systems in place to stop things from getting to the point where worries were justified, let alone the point where the federal government has to step in and international leaders are wringing their hands.

It wasn’t just the market, but the banks, that played a part in the latest near-collapse. With so many banks folding left and right, not just in the United States but in many European nations, and even as far away as Asia, federal governments had to scramble. In some countries, like Iceland, the federal government couldn’t bail out the banks and outsiders had to step in, while in the United States, the government now owns shares in Bank of America, like it or not, and BoA has been an integral part of taking over other failing banks.

Playing the market has always been a little bit unpredictable, but the recent events are truly unprecedented. While regular people reading the newspaper might feel as though they have missed something significant in their inability to process recent current events in the financial sector, the fact of the matter is that it is baffling things were allowed to get this bad.

Damian Papworth enjoys stock market investing.
These newsletters are very much like the systems of today that are automated to pick the winning stock for the trader. These robotics simply a software or programs that are fully automated and can be left behind to do the picking of winning stocks for you. On the other hand, the newsletters also do the same purpose, pick the winners, only at a much lower price.

Some however are doing wonders for many stock traders now and are giving them quite an attractive profit. One of them must be Today Hot Stocks. It is an online stock trading newsletter designed to pick stocks that it predicts to be winners and thereby allow the trader to earn profits without the need to study the market continuously.

The software was designed by a programmer who was also an experienced trader. He understands the factors that effect the market and was able to incorporate his knowledge into the program. The system is not hampered by human feelings that can mislead traders.

The system takes advantage of this traders knowledge and expertise and studies all the market factors which can effect a stock. Based on all the factors and probabilities, the system chooses the stocks that are most likely to show a gain. The creator of the system then offers the information generated by this program to subscribers of the newsletter.

All you will have to do is read your e-mail and decide the amount you will put on the stocks. Then, you can already sit and relax and wait for your profits. Too good to be true? Well, that is the beauty of the human brain. Everything can be done and thought of. Solutions to problems are slowly and carefully crafted and this system is surely one of them.
